Heartbreaking Footage Emerges of Little Girl in Philando Castile’s Car

Friday, June 23, 2017

On Wednesday, Minnesota police released further video from the July, 2016 shooting of Philando Castile that sheds heartbreaking light on what Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her 4-year old daughter were going through in the moments immediately following his death.

The footage, from the back seat of a patrol car, shows Reynold’s daughter begging her mother to stop screaming out of fear that she might end up killed by police.

“Mom, please stop saying cuss words and screaming because I don’t want you to get shooted,” the girl can be heard pleading. At this, Reynolds kisses her daughter.

“I could keep you safe,” her daughter then says. “It’s okay,” Reynolds responds. “I got it, okay?”

The video was released as part of a collection of files by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. It came one day after the release of dashboard camera showing the shooting, and five days after St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez, 29, was acquitted of manslaughter.

The 10-minute dashcam video shows Yanez stop Castile driving with Reynolds and her daughter. After an exchange in which Castile says he’s carrying a weapon, Yanez fires several rounds into the car, killing Castile.

Yanez was found not guilty of second degree manslaughter last week and the St. Anthony Police Department announced that he had been fired from his job.

The shooting first gained national attention when Reynolds streamed the aftermath of the encounter on Facebook Live, detailing how Castile was shot during a routine traffic stop.

“Stay with me, we got pulled over for a busted tail light in the back … they killed my boyfriend. He’s licensed to carry,” she said in the livestream before explaining that he was simply trying to get his ID from his wallet.
